Four different history groups cover aspects from World to Modern.

History 1 World

Meets: 3rd Monday of the Month

Time: 10:00 – 12:00

Established a number of years ago as History Group 1, we originally concentrated on British History of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. As time went by we have accepted that later British history is global and indeed modern history is international.
This year we have had contributions on the origin of western languages, the Great Fire of London, the life of Warren Hastings, and ancient Jerusalem. In the pipeline is the Congress of Vienna, Genghis Khan and the 1832 Reform Act.
It is a mutual participation group with members in turn researching a subject of their choice to give before the meeting.

History 2 Modern

Meets: 3rd Thursday of the Month

Time:14:00 – 16:00

Each month, a member will give a 45 minute presentation on a selected, historical subject, following some research. The topic is then thrown open for general discussion where others may contribute any interesting information that they may have acquired independently. None of our members is a professional historian but we are all enthusiasts.
On occasions, we also arrange to visit historic properties, attend theatrical events or visit exhibitions that have a connection with the subject matter.

History 3 The History behind recent events

Meets: 4th Monday of the Month

Time: 14:30 – 16:30

This Group was formed to look at “recent” history, i.e. the history behind recent events.  This year we are exploring the development of the U S A in the 19th century by looking at topics such as The Presidency, the Political Parties, Land Expansion, Immigration, Slavery, Transport and Communication, Allies and Enemies.  Group members, in turn, share their research on a chosen topic with the group and a lively discussion usually ensues.

Our approach to the first theme is via the presentation of a member’s paper each session with discussion, and to the second a more participatory approach, where each member gives a 10 minute “essay” (in turn), relating to their special interest, followed by an attempt to draw conclusions.

History 4 Hidden History

Meets: 2nd Tuesday of the Month

Time: 10:00 – 12:00

Each month we meet to share ‘less well-known topics’ of historical interest. Our sessions are friendly, informal and no one person is responsible for the whole meeting.  We are never short of topics and  have covered the stories of people, events places and even commodities, such as coal and ice!

A typical session would include three or four different subjects. brought to the Group by members, followed by questions and general discussion.

Do come along and join us, this is a very friendly Group and we offer a warm welcome to new members.
